TMNT
Straight from the no-name brand bulk bin in the game creation aisle, through the wardrobe and props departments of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and otherwise direct to videogame disc comes TMNT, the game, an absolutely unremarkable beat-em-up action/adventure with little to say for itself other than "it's too easy being green."
Still, tasked with making a "kid friendly" quickie game based on angst-addled hybrid human Testudines, Ubisoft Montreal, better known for the superlative Prince of Persia games, probably couldn't have made TMNT much better.
It certainly looks great and boasts mostly solid play mechanics, but the problem seems to lie in the fact that movie-based games such as these sell well regardless of quality.
So while this could have been a much, much better wandering martial art game, it's enough that it's just ridiculously easy button mashing schlock that is only interactive in that you whack some buttons and then watch your preferred turtle (or tag-team of turtles) unleash some wicked-cool moves on swarms of hapless thugs like so much fists-of-fireworks. You never worrying about "dying" because you have unlimited lives, appearing anew with full health and no fear and off you go to mash some more.
Build up you're "rage" meter and you kick-butt better (yeah, that's good for the kids). Throw in a bit of wall running, bauble collecting, box shoving and puzzle solving and poof! Insta movie-game. Carry on.
- TIP: During the Shredder boss fight in TMNT, ignore the Shredder clones as much as you can and instead concentrate on taking down the real Shredder who's just standing there gloating. Use Don's shock move to stun him and then Raphael's attack, which is strongest.
