Down Lo on the Downloads: Shop-Store-Market 01/08
PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360
Downloadable games for consoles made great strides in 2007 and the year's final month of releases made for the most tantalizing selection yet, setting a new standard for quality expectations of 2008. After all, the original Halo is now available at "casual" pricing, big fat pig of a download that it is. But, you know, Halo. How cool is that?

My Word Coach
Wii
Or sure, killing aliens and jumping trucks over volcanoes is fun, but do they make you more loquacious? If only there was a videogame that made your vocabulary gooder. Now that would be cool.

Wii Zapper
Wii
Uninformed parents and knee-jerk self-righteous groups are all a-flutter about the Wii Zapper, which gives the otherwise oddball Wii-mote controls the definitive stylings of a semi-automatic pistol. Fear not, oh fluttering ones, the Zapper is neither menacing nor particularly gun-like in functionality. It just looks that way.

Fascinating.

So if you want true bang for your gift giving buck, here's our guide to what's what, by whom, who for, and wherefore.

The Simpsons Game
PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360
Videogame tie-ins rarely make for good games -- not that TV, movie and merchandising cross-overs can't be good game fodder, they usually just aren't because they sell well enough to a fan base as is. While The Simpsons Game does have plenty of laughs at the expense of the video game industry, gameplay is just as big a joke.
