Evergeek Gift Guide '08: Videogame Systems and Gear
PlayStation 3, Wii, Windows PC, Xbox 360
Tis the season to spend money you don't really have. On the upside, a new videogame system or some related gamer gadgetry is a surefire smile maker. Plus, it's the kind of gift that will literally keep on giving for several years to come. Here's the low down on what's what, for who and how much, and why.
Seasonal Hits and Misses '08: Xbox 360 Games
Xbox 360
For all its high-definition dandiness, Xbox 360 is not without its share of dud games that only look high-end by the gloss of the box art. Inside, not so glossy. On the upside, there's more good than bad and it's pretty hard to go wrong; just know that there are some very bad games to offset the recent glut of very good ones. Here's a run down on some of each.
Evergeek Gift Guide '08: Xbox 360
Xbox 360
Though well established and generally accepted as the new generation at its finest, Microsoft's Xbox 360 continues to suffer an identity crisis. Is it a high-powered, high performance, high definition console like the PlayStation3? Or is it a low cost, interactive entertainment system the whole family can enjoy? With three different models at three different price points, the best holiday bet is the Xbox 360 60GB Pro, which includes most of the essential components and currently happens to come in holiday bundle form with 2 free games (Lego Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Panda), all for $299.99. Heck of a deal.
Evergeek Gift Guide '08: Essential Gamer Gear
PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii, Windows PC, Xbox 360
For every game system there is a gamut of gear to go with -- sold separately, of course. But assuming the hardware is already in hand, here's a batch of wicked cool peripherals hoping to jack-in and enhance the experience.
NBA Live 09
PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
If you're a basketball fan and a gamer, you probably feel compelled to buy a new NBA game every year for updated rosters if nothing else. This year, the one to buy is not NBA Live 09.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Wii, Xbox 360
An original Star Wars tale set after Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed acts as a dark side lead-up to A New Hope. After slashing and shoving your way though it, that's exactly what you'll be pining for.
Army of Two game, the movie
General Use, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Videogame Publisher Electronic Arts and Universal Pictures are teaming up to bring EA's Army of Two game to the big screen. Considering the production crew signed on to do it, there's a decent chance it won't suck.
Fallout 3
Xbox 360
Fallout 3 follows in the auspicious footsteps of role-playing/shooter hybrids before it, Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion and BioShock, widely accepted as Game of the Year in 2006 and 2007 respectively. '08 just might be the year of the Fallout -- on Xbox 360, anyway (the PC version could've been better).
