There's been a cultish buzz on the interweb for some time now; fans of the ubiquitous Street Fighter games have been wanting a movie based on their fave beat 'em up, but not like the one Jean Claude Van Damme was in some 10 years ago, the one where he single-handedly killed and entire would-be franchise.

Capcom just confirmed the main cast for its new live-action Street Fighter movie based on the hugely popular video game series, due in theaters in 2009.

The cast so far:
  • Chun-Li -- Kristin Kreuk. Lana Lang in the WB television series Smallville and one-handed postergirl of many a teenage boy.
  • Balrog -- Michael Clarke Duncan. Star of lots of films where he plays a big hulking dude, i.e. The Island, Daredevil, The Scorpion King, Armageddon and so on.
  • M. Bison -- Neal McDonough, as seen in stuff like The Hitcher, Flags of Our Fathers, The Guardian, Minority Report.
  • Charlie Nash a.k.a. Nash, Udon (Big ups for you Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter II fans) -- Chris Klein. You know, that American Pie dude who's sort of Keanu Reevesish...
  • Vega -- Taboo. Who? Guy from Black Eyed Peas. Who? Just google it...

Parts still up for grabs (or unannounced, at least) include fan favorites and Street Fighter icons like Ryu, Sagat, Zangief, Guile and potentially the Jar Jar/Gollum element with Blanka.

Stay tuned for more Street Fighter news as more characters are cast and, hopefully, a plot is written. Don't hold your breath on the last bit.
