Gibson Guitar, incontrovertibly famous purveyor of marvelous musical instruments and music technology, has just announced the launch of the Gibson Guitar App. The downloadable freebie is available to all Apple iPhone and iPod Touch users directly from the Apple App Store.

In the main, the App's feature set revolves around the basic functions of a guitar tuner, including Standard tuning, obviously, as well as open-G or open-D tuning with the click of a button. iPod Touch users will only hear the tone for each string unless an external mic is attached, in which case the App will "listen" and help you hone in on the actual note just like the iPhone version does innately (because it has a mic built-in, you see).

The Gibson App also features a standard metronome that can be set to a specific BPM (beats per minute) but will also lock in step with three taps on the screen.

Other features of the app include 30-odd chord charts with finger markings, along with video tutorials for guitar riffs, licks and chord sequences.

Gibson said it would update the App with new content frequently.
